Server upgrades

February 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Just a quick note to say that the kimanddave.com “empire” is going to be undergoing a server upgrade shortly. Possibly even this weekend. Three weeks ago I bought a new AMD quad-core CPU (yes they’re not the fastest but I believe we need the multi-processor quad core capabilities more than we need a single core to be as fast as possible,) a new socket AM2+ motherboard, 2GB of new memory, and the cheapest PCIexpress video card I could find. A week later, I dropped all of that into an existing case as an upgrade without too much trouble. The old machine was running CentOS 5.1 and the only problem was that the SATA controller was different so I had to boot into recovery mode and make a new initrd image. The machine came right up after that and everything has been running solid since. I’ll be porting our data and config to this new machine at some point and this should speed up our blog serving a bit. Then the only problem will be our low bandwidth internet connection.
